He was born in Berlin where he went to university while he worked as an editor-in-chief of a cinema magazine called Kino. In 1968, he became a film critic in Hambourg. He left RFA to live in London and founded with his wife his own distribution company Artiificial Eye Film Company. The company initiated Zoo, by Peter Greenway, and Temps difficiles, by Joao Bothelo. He bought a movie theater in 1977. Melancholia is his first feature film.
