Filmmaker Chantal Akerman was born in Brussels in 1950 and died in Paris in 2015. Her filmography includes some forty films in fiction, documentary, musical comedy and literary adaptation. Her work has been, and continues to be, widely acclaimed worldwide, ever since her masterpiece Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Brussels, was presented at the Directors’ Fortnight. From 1995 onwards, Chantal Akerman diversified her practice, creating installations that would also place her in the world of contemporary art.
She is considered one of the most influential European directors of her generation, and her invaluable legacy is claimed by filmmakers such as Gus Van Sant, Todd Haynes, Kelly Reichardt, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Céline Sciamma and Alice Diop.
