Born in 1939, Francis Ford Coppola is one of the finest directors alive. He twice won the Best Film Oscar for The Godfather and The Godfather 2 (1972 and 1974), and twice the Palme d’or at Cannes for The Conversation (1974) and Apocalypse Now (1979). In 1969 he and his friend George Lucas created American Zoetrope studios which produced Lucas’s THX 1138 (1971, selected for the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs). He is the father of Sofia and Roman Coppola, both directors.
