Kantemir Balagov is a Russian film director, screenwriter, and cinematographer born in Nalchik. He trained at the Sokurov Studio at the University of Kabardino-Balkaria, where he made three short films in one year. His first feature film, Closeness, won the FIPRESCI Prize at Cannes. With Beanpole, a post-war drama set in Leningrad, he won Best Director in the Un Certain Regard section and again the FIPRESCI Prize.
