He was born in Hong-Kong and went to the USA when he was 18; he studied fine arts at the Californian College of Arts and Crafts. He directed a documentary and was an assistant to direction on an American film made in Hong Kong; he directed a TV serie, Below the lion Rock and he dedicated to integration of chinese in the USA. He made a medium length documentary and produced a serie for TV, Wah Kue:the Chinese in America. He directed his first feature film Chan Is Missing, in 1982. His second movie was shown at The Directors’ Fortnight and won the best foreign film British Academy award in 1985.
