He was born in Bamako. He was a teacher and worked at the National Cinema Production Center as a camera operator. He wrote novels ans plays. In 1988, he directed Nieba, a short film. In 1991,, his first full length film, Ta-Donna, was shown in Cannes and won 13 international prizes. Taafé Fanga is his second feature film.
