Life on a String

Life on a String is a meditation on New York City as inspired by five songs written and performed by Laurie Anderson merged into one suite, creating its own thematic narrative. The film mixes impressionistic, absurdist and ghost-like imagery of the city and its people, with Anderson herself as both the observer and the observed. Illuminating the tension between the past and the present, Life on a String merges Super 8mm film and Digital Video to create a distinct visual form. Completed in the summer of 2001, it has unexpectedly become a window into the old world, on the verge of a new one.

Steven Lippman

Steven Lippman has directed music short films, videos and documentaries for Jane Monheit, Julia Fordham and The Manhattan Transfer, among others, and was a 1998 recipient of the Peter S. Reed Foundation award. His short profiles on Philip Glass, Harold Pinter, Trisha Brown, Cirque Plume and Youssou N’Dour were broadcast on PBS as part of the 2001 Live from the Lincoln Center Festival of the Arts. He is currently preparing for his feature-film directorial debut, The History of Everything. Steven Lippman most recently directed and conceived an untitled project with Kronos Quartet.
